Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
Our practice has established designation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence from 3 organizations.
1) The American Society for Bariatric Surgery
Your Lap Band surgeons Dr. Ron Hekier and Dr. Rachael
Keilin have received the American Society for Bariatric
Surgery Center of Excellence designation. The Surgical
Review Corporation states "A program’s designation
publicly honors it as being the best of the best. In
becoming a BSCOE (Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence),
the program has held itself up to some of the highest
standards in the industry. The designation is indicative
of the Center’s comprehensive commitment to a high level

2) Blue Cross/Blue Shield Bariatric Surgery Center of Distinction
In July 2008 we established a Blue Cross Blue Shield Center of Distinction with a local hospital in Texarkana. As of October 2008 there were only 15 other centers of distinction in Texas, 1 in Oklahoma, 2 in Louisiania and none in Arkansas.
3) Optum Health Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (United Health Care)
In October 2008 we established certification at a local hospital as an Optum Health Bariatric Center of Excellence. This organizations covers many patients with United Health Care and other third party payors.
Medicare Lap Band
Not only is the Center of Excellence designation an indication
of the overall program's committment to high standards,
it is also a requirement for patients with Medicare. Medicare
will only pay for Lap Band surgery by surgeons and hospitals
designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
Wadley Regional Medical Center is the affiliated hospital
that is designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

Medicare has many requirements that must be fulfilled
before a person can potentially qualify for Lap Band
surgery. These requirements may take months to fulfill,
and not all people will be eligible candidates.
